Lakeshore’s girls golf team survived some tough conditions to earn a trip back to the Division 3 state finals.

The Lancers placed second in Wednesday’s regional at Island Hills in Centreville with a score of 396. Sturgis won with a score of 375.

Niles also qualified for state, finishing third at 411. South Haven’s Carley Mielke was an individual state qualifier, finishing third with a score of 89.

Rain delayed the start of the event by several hours and left the course difficult to play.

“That’s maybe the most challenging round of golf I’ve ever seen,” Lakeshore coach Pam Porter said. “We left school at 6:45 and didn’t tee off until 1:30. The golfers came up 18 past sunset. Big puddles of water everywhere.

“I feel like they really persevered. They really dug their heels in to go get it. They really wanted to get back to the state tournament.”

Regan Holgate led Lakeshore with a 90, good fourth place individually. Lydia Augnst had a 99, Karna Johnson shot 100, Kate Miller carded 107 and Avery Adams had a 110.

“It’s probably not our best day of golf, but with the conditions, it was good enough,” Porter said.

The Division 3 state finals will be held at Michigan State University’s Forest Akers West Course next Friday and Saturday.

Lakeshore was 11th last season at the state finals.

“Our goal was to get a score of about 380,” Porter said. “I really feel we’re still very capable of that. We’ll think about a team score rather than where we might place.”

Two other golf regionals were postponed until today due to the weather.

St. Joseph will compete in the Division 2 regional hosted by Gull Lake at Stonehedge North Golf Course. Lake Michigan Catholic will take part in the Division 4 regional at Milham Park Golf Course in Kalamazoo.
